On August 2, 2012, an Ariane 5 launch vehicle lifted off from Kourou, French Guiana, with two telecommunications satellites, Intelsat 20 and Hylas-2. This was the 50th successful Ariane flight in a row.

Progress M-16M (Western designation Progress 47) lifted off from Baikonur on August 1, 2012. Six hours later, Progress automatically docked to the International Space Station. The new accelerated rendezvous could be also applied to manned Soyuz vehicles in the future.

Progress 47 redocked to the International Space Station on July 28, 2012, after completing tests of an upgraded rendezvous system. The spacecraft will undock on July 30 and spend the following couple of weeks in the vicinity of the station in order to complete more tests.
