The GRAIL spacecraft separated from the upper stage of the Delta II launch vehicle and will travel to the Moon on a three and a half month low-energy transfer trajectory. The spacecraft take the scenic route, travelling to the Moon via the L1 Lagrange point, and saving fuel (around 130 m/s less delta V required). GRAIL spacecraft will approach the Moon under the South Pole and enter the operational orbit, 50 km above the lunar surface.
