Active region 1283 produced a second solar flare on September 6, 2011. The second flare was an X-class flare, much more disruptive than the first one.

GRAIL Spacecraft Separation

The GRAIL spacecraft separated from the upper stage of the Delta II launch vehicle and will travel to the Moon on a three and a half month low-energy transfer trajectory. The spacecraft take the scenic route, travelling to the Moon via the L1 Lagrange point, and saving fuel (around 130 m/s less delta V required). GRAIL spacecraft will approach the Moon under the South Pole and enter the operational orbit, 50 km above the lunar surface.

GRAIL Mission Launch

On September 10, 2011, a United Launch Alliance Delta II launch vehicle lifted off with NASA\’s GRAIL spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The GRAIL twins will reach the Moon in about three and a half months. GRAIL will determine the structure of the lunar interior.
