Juno has to perform a very smart trick when in orbit around Jupiter in order to avoid the radiation belts. The high-energy charged particle radiation can damage the onboard electronics and put an end even to unmanned space missions. Juno will come within 5,000 kilometers of Jupiter\’s upper atmosphere, below the radiation belts.
