Northrop Grumman dicit:

“We completed the second qualification test for the launch abort motor for NASA’s Orion Spacecraft. The motor fired for 5 seconds with a force of just under 370,000 pounds and will be used to pull the crewed capsule away from NASA’s Space Launch System in the event of an emergency on the launch pad or during ascent. The next major milestone for the motor will be the Ascent Abort-2 Flight Test (AA-2) that will take place in 2019.”

“In a test targeted for April 2019 known as Ascent Abort-2, NASA will verify the Orion spacecraft’s launch abort system, a tower on top of the crew module, can steer the capsule and astronauts inside it to safety in the event of an issue with the Space Launch System rocket when the spacecraft is under the highest aerodynamic loads it will experience during ascent for deep-space missions. The test is quick, fast and high, lasting less than three minutes with the test crew module reaching an average speed of Mach 1.5, roughly 1020 miles per hour, at approximately 32,000 feet in altitude.”

“Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) will be the first integrated flight of NASA’s Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft and launch from the agency’s modernized spaceport in Florida. The uncrewed mission will send Orion thousands of miles beyond the Moon and is a critical flight test for NASA’s human deep space exploration goals. EM-1 lays the foundation for the first crewed flight of SLS and Orion, as well as a regular cadence of missions thereafter near the Moon and beyond.”

“NASA’s Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean approximately 600 southwest of San Diego. The recovery team from NASA, the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin will perform initial recovery operations, including safing the crew module and towing it into the well deck of the USS Anchorage, a landing platform-dock ship.”

“NASA’s Orion spacecraft launched successfully atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket Dec. 5 at 7:05 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Orion’s Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1), is the first flight test for NASA’s new deep space capsule and is a critical step on NASA’s journey to Mars. The 4.5 hour flight is scheduled to conclude with the splashdown of Orion in the Pacific Ocean.”
