Hurricane Irene

Images captured by NOAA\’s GOES-13 satellite from August 21 through August 29 show the Hurricane Irene\’s track from the Caribbean to Canada. Irene made landfalls in North Carolina, New Jersey, and New York.

NASA\’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded how a sunspot group changed over a period of a couple of days. The images were produced by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument.

Soyuz-U/Progress M-12M Launch

On August 24, 2011, 325 seconds into the flight, a flight violation triggered an emergency shutdown of the upper stage of the Soyuz-U launch vehicle. Progress M-12M and the upper stage crashed in the Altai region, a remote region near the border with China.

Soyuz-U/Progress M-12M Rollout

On August 22, 2011, a Soyuz-U launch vehicle rolled out with Progress M-12M at Baikonur. Progress was packed with 2670 kg of cargo consisting of scientific equipment, fuel, food, and water.
