The Lift-Off Of Apollo 11

A Saturn V rocket launched Apollo 11 from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969, at 9:32 AM EDT. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The Apollo 11 crew consisted of Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene \’Buzz\’ Aldrin, Jr.

STS-127 Launch

STS-127 Space Shuttle Endeavour launched from NASA\’s Kennedy Space Center on July 15, 2009, at 6:03 PM EDT. STS-127 will complete the Japanese Experiment Module by installing the Exposed Facility and the Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section. The STS-127 crew consists of Commander Mark Polansky, Pilot Doug Hurley, astronauts Dave Wolf, Christopher Cassidy, Canadian Julie Payette, Tom Marshburn, and Tim Kopra, all mission specialists.

SpaceX\’s Falcon 1 launch vehicle just completed its second successful launch. Falcon 1 carried RazakSAT, a Malaysian Earth Observing satellite, into orbit.

SMOS Mission

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, which is the second Earth Explorer Opportunity mission to be developed as part of ESA’s Living Planet Program, will provide global maps of moisture over the Earth’s landmasses and salinity over the oceans. These observations will improve our understanding of hydrology and ocean circulation patterns.

Launch of GOES-O

On June 27, 2009, 6:51 PM EDT, the GOES-O weather satellite launched aboard a Delta IV launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. GOES-O became GOES-14 on July 7, 2009, when it reached its planed geostationary orbit (35,900 km).

TerreStar-1 Launch

On July 1, 2009, an Ariane 5 ECA lifted off from Kourou, French Guiana. The 45th mission of an Ariane 5 carried on orbit the TerreSat-1 satellite, which was the heaviest commercial satellite ever launched.
