Space Shuttle Discovery rolled out from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39A on September 21, 2010. Discovery will lift off on November 1, 2010, for its STS-133 mission. STS-133 will be the 35th station flight.

LRO Mission Results

The data recorded by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Lunar Orbiter Altimeter (LOLA) has revealed that the moon was bombarded by two distinct populations of asteroids or comets in its youth. Also, the surface of the moon proves to be much more complex than previously thought.

Progress 39 Docking

Progress 39 resupply vehicle automatically docked to the aft port of the Zvezda service module of the International Space Station on Sunday, September 12, 2010, using the Kurs automated rendezvous system.
The cargo spacecraft brings to the station propellant, oxygen, water, spare parts, experiment hardware, and other supplies.

MICHIBIKI Launch

The H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 18 (H-IIA F18) with the satellite “MICHIBIKI” onboard was launched on September 11, 2010, from the Tanegashima Space Center. MICHIBIKI is the first satellite in the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). The quasi-zenith satellites will provide a high accuracy satellite positioning service.

Soyuz-U Launch

On September 10, 2010, a Soyuz-U launch vehicle liffted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome carrying a Progress M-07M cargo spacecraft. The Progress spacecraft, dubbed ISS Progress 39, will deliver propellant, oxygen, water, and other supplies to the Expedition 24 crew members. Docking with the station is scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2010.

The Rosette Nebula

Data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory revealed hundreds of young stars in the central cluster and the fainter clusters on either side of the Rosette star formation region, located about 5,000 light years from Earth. In the cluster on the right side of the region, named NGC 2237, about 160 new young stars have been discovered using the data collected by Chandra.
