ESA\’s Giotto spacecraft swept within 596 kilometers of Comet Halley\’s nucleus on March 13, 1986. Giotto was part of the Halley Armada, a group of five spacecraft that intercepted and studied the comet (Giotto, two Russian Vega probes and two Japanese probes, Sakigake and Suisei).
At Baikonur the Progress M-11M cargo spacecraft is closer to launch. The spacecraft is integrated with the protective fairing. The fairing protects the payload during the ascent against the effects of aerodynamic pressure and aerodynamic heating.
ESA\’s Proba-2 captured images of a medium class M2.5 solar flare on June 7, 2011. The SWAP (the Sun Watcher using Active Pixel-sensor) imager on Proba-2 captured the massive eruption.
The video was created with twenty images obtained by the Dawn spacecraft on June 1, 2011. Vesta is roughly 100 kilometers in diameter and has an enormous crater at its south pole. The crater can be seen in the video as a dark feature that moves from left to right across the field of view.
The Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module is lowered into the payload canister at the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA\’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Raffaello will be delivered to the International Space Station during Space Shuttle Atlantis\’ STS-135 mission.
